Desiree Singer - Artist Printmaker

Desiree Singer - Artist Printmaker

I am very pleased to welcome Desiree Singer – Artist Printmaker to Ochre.

The passion for printmaking struck Singer during 2011 while completing 3 terms at Inverlochy House, Wellington. Building on that passion she now uses various collagraphy, etching, woodcut and drypoint/intaglio techniques.

Describing her work to be hybrid with contemporary, abstract and somewhat impressionist themes, Singer commits her creativity to the printed page with a peaceful certainty.  Inspiration is drawn from travel, significant life events, being in her home & garden, and from the great artists Monet, Modigliani, Matisse and Picasso.

2013 brought Singer from Wellington to the Rangitikei.

Involving herself in exhibitions and art events in Wellington, Whanganui & Rangitikei, Singer also had a work accepted into the 22/23 Pattillo Art Review.

Process

Singer employs several techniques to make relief plates, including woodcut, lino cut, embossing collagraphy, and the use of textured papers, leaves, etc.

Lino and wood cut rely on carving the design into the plate material with knives and engraving tools.

Collagraphy refers to a collage of materials glued onto the “plate”, usually cardboard. When the glue is dry, she seals the plate so it can be inked up.

Drypoint is Singer’s main intaglio technique. Scratching her design into acetate with a dremmel or manual needle/stylus tool. In ’22 she began using Tetrapak and computer disks which have produced interesting works.

Known as the most painterly of print methods, monoprint is intent on singular impressions. As no two prints are alike editioning is not possible.

In printmaking, an edition is a number of prints struck from one plate, usually at the same time. Singer produces limited editions and these rarely run above 10. She offers her work framed or wrapped.

Please join me in supporting Desiree Singer, Rangitikei.

Best wishes,

Carla Woollaston
